Motion Accorded Priority: State Infrastructure

Dr HUGH McDERMOTT ( Prospect ) ( 16:19 ): What a ridiculous motion.

Mr Geoff Provest: So nothing is happening?

Dr HUGH McDERMOTT: Of course it is. This Government is in its death throes. It has only two years to go. It would have been gone by now but elections are required by legislation to be held every four years. This Government is on its way out. This Government will be remembered for two things—mismanagement and incompetence in its delivery of infrastructure. The member for Maroubra referred earlier to the mismanagement and incompetence of this Government. The cost of WestConnex has blown out from $10 billion to $16.8 billion; the CBD and South East Light Rail project has blown out from $1.6 billion to $2.1 billion; the Sydney Metro City and Southwest project has blown out from $9 billion or $11 billion to $12.5 billion; the $75 million upgrade of the Sydney ferry fleet has been delayed because the new ferries were riddled with design flaws that are yet to be rectified; and the Tibby Cotter Bridge, which the member for Maroubra mentioned, could have been built for $10 million but ended up costing $35 million of taxpayers' money. The Nepean Green Bridge, which was promised for $20 million, will end up costing close to $50 million.

All the new trains that are being acquired are to be built overseas rather than in Wollongong by Australian workers. They will now cost significantly more and thousands of jobs and opportunities will be lost in regional New South Wales. This Government ordered new intercity trains which are too wide for the line from Lithgow to Katoomba. The cost of modifying the line is not yet known but that will result in millions more dollars being wasted. This Government budgeted only $1 million for Parramatta Light Rail but leaked documents reveal that that project may cost up to $3.5 billion.

Let us look at Labor's track record. Contrary to the facts supplied earlier by Government members, in particular the member for Tweed, Labor has an extensive record in delivering transport projects. I begin with the Westlink M7 project which cost $1.6 billion, the Chatswood to Epping rail line which cost $1.4 billion and the Eastern Distributor which cost $680 million. The Lane Cove tunnel cost $1.1 billion; upgrades for the Pacific Highway cost $1.6 billion and the M5 East cost $650 million. The Cross City Tunnel cost $680 million; the Parramatta-Rouse Hill T-way cost $524 million; and the Parramatta-Liverpool T-way cost $100 million. Labor also delivered the Olympic Park Rail, Seacliff Bridge, Woronora Bridge, the duplication of the Iron Cove Bridge and the widening of the M4 west of Granville.

Labor commenced the South West Rail line—a $550 million project—and Inner West Light Rail, the rail clearways project and Millennium and Waratah carriages for Sydney and new OSCARS on inter-city routes. Labor introduced Metrobus services and cleaner compressed natural gas [CNG] buses and an upgrade of the Windsor Road. [Time expired.]
